16th Annual Leben Play Therapy Symposium

Grounded in the influential work of the late Dr. Violet Oaklander, author of Windows to Our Children and Hidden Treasure, this training introduces participants to the Oaklander Model of Gestalt Therapy for children, adolescents, and families. Oaklander’s widely translated and internationally recognized approach continues to shape play therapy practice through its emphasis on relationship, awareness, creative expression, and the development of a strong sense of self.

Presented by Karen Fried, Psy.D., M.F.T., this experience-based training brings the Oaklander Model to life through practical instruction, facilitated exploration, and hands-on techniques clinicians can apply in their own work settings. Participants will learn how Fried translates Oaklander’s core concepts into engaging therapeutic practice using a variety of creative media, including drawing, clay, and more.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of the training, participants will be able to... 

• Explain the Oaklander Model of Gestalt Therapy and how to apply it when working with children and adolescents.
• Describe the concept of the I/Thou relationship and why it’s such an important part of the play therapy process.
• List three developmental issues related to children and how to address them using play therapy.
• Demonstrate two play therapy techniques used to help children develop a strong sense of self.
• Apply the developmental concepts related to children and how play therapy using the Oaklander Model addresses these issues.
• Practice the projective process to apply most experiences of Gestalt Play therapy using the Oaklander Model.
