Why Are We So Behind in Treating Addiction?

This timely workshop equips clinicians and behavioral health professionals to respond to fast-changing addiction patterns with sharper diagnostic insight, practical intervention strategies, and recovery-centered treatment planning.

Participants will examine major gaps in addiction treatment and education and consider how those gaps affect psychiatry, diagnosis, and treatment services. The session will explore the neuroscience of addiction and compare multiple forms of addiction, including gambling, pornography, relationships, substances, AI, and video games. In the second half, participants will move from understanding to application, focusing on effective interventions, recovery support, and community-informed treatment planning.

By the end of the workshop, participants will be better prepared to recognize emerging addiction patterns, strengthen treatment planning, and support clients through practical, recovery-centered approaches.

At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

· Identify gaps in addiction treatment and the high rates of misdiagnosis and mis-medication. Participants will identify solutions for how to fill the gap in training.

· Identify signs of addiction and different types of addictions and how they are different and can require different treatment interventions.

· Explain the neuroscience of addiction in order to prevent stigmatization and to learn how to incorporate neuroscience into clinical treatment.

· Apply effective, evidence-based treatment interventions

· Consider ethical concerns that arise in treatment settings and how to maintain high ethical standards in their clinical practices
